For the past few years, food lovers throughout LA eagerly awaited for LA Weekly’s publication of Jonathan Gold’s list of 99 essential restaurants. It became an obsession in the LA food scene. Restaurants wanted to make the list. Serious eaters wanted to eat their way through the list.

During the 2009 edition of J Gold’s essential 99 list, one extremely optimistic suitor of mine had highlighted all the restaurants he wanted to go to with me. Sadly, this suitor lived in his car – by choice not necessity – and that was just one of the red flags. There was NO way that I was going to check out 42 restaurants with the homeless-actor-living-in-a-car-taking-showers-at-the-gym.

Since Jonathan Gold left the LA Weekly earlier this year – for the greener pastures of the LA Times –  it’s clear that the LA food community needs another list. Besha Rodell is the new food critic at LA Weekly and she needs a little more time to get acquainted with the LA dining scene. I’m hoping she creates her own list of essential restaurants.

Until then, here’ s my amateur attempt at assembling an essential list of places to eat in LA. Most on these are from Jonathan Gold’s 99 essential list (from 2011). At my most recent count, I had managed to make my way through the third of the list.

One of the toughest things about my recent breakup has to do with food memories. My ex shared my passion for food. Food brought us together.

The first time we shared food it was at LudoBites 8.0.  I had an extra seat at my table of 4. Last minute reservation. He was working late at the office. He ended up taking up the last spot at our table.  His passion for food rivaled mine.

The next time we shared food was at dinner party we hosted together, showcasing both of our cooking skills. I remember the menu. I made a roasted leg of lamb, roasted potatoes and feta cheese turnovers. He made creamed spinach, bacon wrapped dates, macaroons and bacon jam. This was not a date. But it was the beginning of our friendship.

More food memories followed. French, Korean, Cuban. Home made food brought to the office.  And then there was LudoBites again. This time foie gras night. Followed up more foie gras, this time at Animal. And after months of sharing food, we shared a kiss and just like that a friendship turned into a relationship.

This is the story of our relationship… told through food.

It’s February.  I haven’t made New Year’s resolutions but I can say that I finally kept one of my resolutions. Last year I enjoyed life. I kept my resolution to cook more, entertain more, and worry less. I hosted dinner parties. I cooked… a lot of lamb dinners. And I worried less.

2011 was a year of healing and growth.  It was also a year of joy. I traveled to Armenia and reconnected with relatives. I hadn’t seen my family in almost 10 years and I got to know my family members as an adult.  I fell in love with my family and discovered how lucky I am to have them in my life, even if they’re about 10,000 kilometers away. Yep. I’m still on the metric system. After 21 years in US, I still think the metric system is superior… and simpler. So I’ll stick with it. Remnants of a communist past (which gave me much better foundation in math and science than the system in the US).

2011 also brought a new chapter in my career. I started a job that I really, truly love. Not just like. Or tolerate. But love. I’m happy. Which makes all the other areas of my life so much better.

And here’s my 2011 in pictures. I can only imagine what 2012 has to offer. Cheers! (more…)

Where do I start…

On March 1, my lovely roommate of two years (and still my good friend) Rachel told me she was moving out. This came as a shock because just a month earlier we had been talking about our living arrangement and she mentioned that she wasn’t planning on moving out for at least another 6-7 months. And exactly two years after my last roommate search, I was back in the same place.

So I posted an ad on craigslist and got a slew of responses. The first response was from a guy who works in my company, in the same division as my ex-bf. Needless to say, I decided to keep searching and found a lovely new roommate.

Now some news from the dating world. The very brief romance with the cute comic/actor didn’t exactly go anywhere. Too bad. He was a good kisser. And in an effort to meet new people I decided to join an online dating site. This time around it’s okcupid. I think I’m about a week away from deactivating my profile. Every time I join an online dating site — usually in the “cold” LA months when the temperatures reach below 60 degrees — I quickly remember why I don’t like these sites. (more…)

I was reading the list of the resolutions I made at the beginning of the year and came to realize that my batting average is still about 50% when it comes to resolutions. But then I started to think about all the things I actually experienced this year, which made me feel better about all the resolutions I didn’t keep (specifically numbers 1-5).

So here is a recap of my year, in pictures. (more…)

Love, Food and Wine

Someone asked me if 2010 has been a good year or a bad year.  Like so many other years, this year has had some great highs and lows. But if I had to choose 3 words to describe my year, I’d pick love, food and wine.

I have experienced a lot more this year than most of my adult life. And the three constants in my life were love, food and wine. I fell in love. I got my heart broken. Shattered actually. But even as I go through the process of healing my heart, I’m starting to see all the good that came out of that experience.

So here it goes. My year in review.

Last night was my first post-breakup real date not to be confused with my post-breakup rebound. Saturday night was an actual date which wouldn’t have happened had I not broken my new year’s resolution #1. I met him at one of my gyms.  Our deep and meaningful conversation in the gym parking lot led to exchanging phone numbers and agreeing to a date. Right after I agreed to a date on a Saturday night I started to have major regrets. First, it was a Saturday night. I’d much rather be getting my wine on at Bar Covell, my favorite bar in LA. Second, I started to get the sense that he might not be that smart. Don’t ask me why.

After agreeing to a dinner on Saturday evening sometime on Tuesday, I kept hoping he’ll forget about the date sometime between Tuesday and Saturday. That didn’t happen. I ran into him at the gym and he confirmed our dinner plans. There was no way out. I could have lied, but when I agree to do something I follow through. At around 7:32 pm I was convinced he was not going to show up. I was wrong. He showed up.

So I asked, “Do you know where you’re taking me for dinner?” I was hoping he would mention someplace in Hollywood. Like Magnolia, The District, or Sushi Ike, just to name a few. But all I got was “Yes” as he slowly drove down my street, turned left on Franklin and headed east driving 17 mph in a 35 mile zone. (more…)

Woke up Tuesday morning hungry and disoriented, quickly realizing that I’m not in my bed. I’m in a small bed at a Comfort Inn in the middle of Paris. Stomach was growling after 10 hrs of sleep so I made my way to Bistro 77, same place as the night before. Isabelle had said that they serve breakfast so there I was.

I had my first real breakfast in Paris. A nice big baguette, which came to my table with butter spread across, followed by ham and cheese omelet. So simple and yet so good. I just love that in Paris, butter is not on the side. It’s spread across the bread, where it’s supposed to be. Pure heaven. While I was having my breakfast, Isabelle asked one of the patrons if he spoke English. Turns out that the guy was a Lebanese lawyer in Paris, spoke English, and even a few words in Armenian. When he found out that I was in town by myself, he ever-so-kindly offered to be my lover and tour guide for a week. I nicely turned him down. Mr. Short Fatty didn’t stand a chance.

After the ridiculously good breakfast decided to take a walk. Didn’t know where I was going but somehow ended up right in front of the Pantheon, a burial place for the very famous French but only those that have made important cultural contributions to France (and the world). The likes of Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Victor Hugo, and my favorite… Alexander Dumas. Seeing Dumas was emotional since he’s one of my favorites and I’ve read The Count of Monte Cristo in three different languages, several times.

Five more days and I’m headed to Paris for the week of Thanksgiving. A real vacation after a really long time. One that involves leaving the continent and a foreign language which I don’t speak. The last time I had a real vacation was a little over a year ago when I spent a few days in DC hanging out with Matt Henry and saying au revoir to the Bush Administration. So other than a few long weekends here and there, and a Fawntastic wedding weekend in Chicago, I haven’t had much vacation since September 2008.

Haven’t thought about what I’m going to do or what I’m going to see. All I think about is eating my way through Paris. Crepes. Baguettes. Lots and lots of cheese. And lots and lots of dishes with foie gras. If I see the words “foie gras” on the menu and I don’t recognize any other words in the menu, that’s what I’ll have.

So after a year of no rest, I get to take a break from it all. No deadlines. No alarm clocks. No driving in traffic in LA. No email. And no TV.

Just a week by myself, in Paris, in the company of French food and wine and maybe some French men on the side.

It’s been three very long months since my last dinner at Ludo Bites and another month to go until my next one. Since my first dinner at Ludo Bites I’ve pretty much become obsessed with the food. Not exaggerating, but it’s the best food I have ever had. Don’t know how to explain it but never before have I had food that I obsess about for days and weeks after. If I could, I would have dinner at Ludo Bites every single day.

And now it’s back, for 13 magical days in December. The minute I found out — from following Chef Ludo and his wonderful wife Krissy on Twitter — I went online and made two reservations. When I decided to look at my calendar and see when I could snag a third reservation they were no longer taking reservation requests. (more…)
