President Obama!

That’s right. Nine months in the office, no real accomplishments, still fighting two wars, and he gets a Nobel Peace Prize. Wow. This must have been a very slow year for the Nobel Peace Prize committee. Were there no other available candidates in the peace pool? Did someone at the Nobel committee get the words “hope “and “peace” confused? (more…)

President Obama is in charge. The Democrats are in control of the House and the Senate. And I don’t know what to do with myself. I have been angry for the last eight years. For eight years, I’ve been unable to finish reading anything related to Bush administration policies. I could not read without getting angry. For eight years I was unable to listen to Bush’s news conferences without cringing and getting angry. For eight years I was in total disbelief that Bush was in office and that millions of Americans had actually voted to put him there. That just made me even more depressed. For eight years I couldn’t watch the news without getting angry. I pretty much stopped watching cable news, or any news. The soothing voice of NPR kept me going and kept me informed. (more…)

Subject: McCain Democrats, Continuing the Fight

Dear Eliza,

Many of you were strong Hillary Clinton supporters. In light of the recent events we realize that many of you are unsure how to best use your vote.

As democrats we find ourselves in a similar situation of doubt as to how best continue the fight this November election. In response, we have a created a site specifically for voters like you: democrats who wish to continue the fight we have worked so long and hard to support. (more…)

An unqualified, inexperienced, gun-toting, American-flag bikini-wearing pretty face. And don’t get me started on the Hillary comparisons. Really? You’re going to compare an inexperienced, hillbilly, to an accomplished, experienced, intelligent woman? What exactly are we comparing here? That both women have vagina? That’s about the only thing that these candidates have in common. And as far as Palin’s comment about shattering the glass ceiling… I’ve got news for you lady. A woman in the VP spot does NOT shatter the glass ceiling. If she did, then Geraldine Ferraro shattered that ceiling 20 years ago on the Democratic ticket. A woman on the VP spot is just not good enough. An inexperienced woman on the VP spot is even worst. That is NOT shattering the glass ceiling. That’s setting the feminist movement back another 100 years. (more…)

Dear Hillary,

Thank you. You have once again inspired me. You will always have my support, financially and emotionally. I always thought you were the better choice and tonight you proved it once again. I’m glad that the rest of the country FINALLY got to see the class act that you are. They finally got to see the real you. Not the version of you that was demonized by the media. Not a sound byte out of context. But the real you. Strong, intelligent, capable, experienced and presidential you. The rest of the nation finally got to see the woman that so many of us have believed in and continue to believe in.

I will cast my vote for Barack Obama in November, in honor of you. And because as a true democrat I would have never voted for McCain and all that he stands for. I still believe that you belong in the White House. I know that one day you will get to the White House. I can’t wait for that day.

Love,

Eliza

Now that Obama has picked his running mate, my five stage grieving process has reached its conclusion. Acceptance. My optimistic side held on to hope, despite the discouraging reality. In the end, I’m not disappointed that his running mate is Biden. I’m disappointed that it’s not Hillary Clinton running for President. The person more likely to beat McCain. Who knows, maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Maybe Obama will beat McCain. I just think that sometimes hope and reality don’t coexist. In my case, my hope for seeing Hillary Clinton in the White House could not co-exist with the reality of overt sexism and misogyny . As for Obama, the sugarcoated message of hope just doesn’t seem enough to overcome his lack of experience and the Bradley factor. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Maybe we will get a democrat in the White House.  I just think that’s a stronger reality in 2012.  Hillary… I’ll see you in the White House in 2012.

He needs balls. Perhaps he can borrow them from Hillary Clinton, just long enough to win a national election. For all the negative rap the Clintons got for their campaign tactics during the Democratic primaries, one thing is for certain, they know how to win elections. Between the two, the Clintons have won Presidential, Gubernatorial and Senatorial elections. They know how to play to win. And they understand that when it comes to the big game, you need to play fire with fire. You can’t use little league strategy in the major leagues. And that’s what Obama might learn the hard way. If he doesn’t start responding to McCain’s negative ads. Turns out, those ads have been pretty effective. (more…)

Rumor has it that McCain is going to pick Mitt Romney as his Vice Presidential running mate. Is that the best he can come up with? Makes sense to me. If you’re lagging behind Obama in fundraising, why not pick a VP who can act like an ATM. Romney will write the checks, and McCain will keep on running. If he does in fact pick Romney, I don’t know if it’s going to get him any points with the conservatives. Sure Romney is conservative, but he’s a Mormon and that’s just not the same bible as far as evangelicals are concerned. (more…)

Political spouses typically fall under two categories… Jackie* or Abigail**. The housewife or the career wife. Throughout history, there have been quite a few extraordinary first ladies… but the ones that seem to come under most scrutiny are the ones that defy traditional gender roles.

Our country is most comfortable with the “Jackie” image of a first lady. Someone who views their role in a marriage as a homemaker, entertainer, and a decorator. Someone who can put aside her ambitions and wholeheartedly support those of her husband’s. Someone who doesn’t threaten the status quo. We are less comfortable with the Abigail prototype. The ambitious wife who wants to be involved outside the kitchen. The one that wants to shape policy. The one who has brains and wants to put them to good use.

Cindy McCain doesn’t threaten the status quo. Michelle Obama does. Barbara Bush didn’t threaten the status quo. Hillary Clinton did. Laura Bush didn’t. Teresa Heinz (Kerry) did. When it comes to political wives, outspoken is out. Soft-spoken is in. Making policy is out. Baking cookies is in. Ambition is definitely out. (more…)

Looks like she’s going to concede, end her run and endorse Senator Obama. I’m sad. Really sad. As a good democrat, I will vote for Obama. This whole process has made me very disheartened. And I know that the process has been very different for Obama supporters. He ran a good campaign, but he also received a very different treatment from the media. I hate how the media treated Hillary Clinton. The vicious name calling — monster, she-devil and bitch among many — left me sick in my stomach. (more…)
